Toward Photo Book - Documentary
Yiorgos Doukanaris Photobook – Calais
Toward project was taking part in Calais, France between 2014-2015. The project is about the refugee crisis that took place in Calais, where many refugees were trying to get through the tunnel of Calais to Dover and find a better life in UK. This photobook explores the refugee crisis, offering a deep and evocative visual narrative. Through stunning photography, Doukanaris captures the essence of Calais, from its everyday life to the extraordinary moments that define the camp's character.
This photobook blends documentary-style photography with an artistic perspective, highlighting the unique textures, faces, and scenes of the area. The aim is to create a lasting, immersive experience for readers, inviting them to explore Calais through a new and intimate lens.
Challenges & Approach
The challenge in this project lies in conveying the complex stories of Calais through still images, balancing the beauty of its landscape with the lived experiences of its residents. Our approach has been to work closely with Doukanaris to select the most compelling photographs that reflect the city’s identity, combining portraiture, street photography, and environmental shots.
The Result
The result is a limited edition curated photobook that tells the multi-dimensional story of the refugee crisis in Calais. Each image is carefully chosen to create an emotional connection with the viewer, offering an authentic look into the heart of the city.
